“It is incredibly important that we continue to work together to save this critically endangered species. She came to us at just two years old from the Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo. They will be getting Lulu, our five-year-old eastern black rhino. But it is bittersweet because part of the deal with the Lincoln Park Zoo is that we will be trading one of ours with them. ![]() It's great news that the Buffalo Zoo will be able to give Romeo a home. There are only about 5,500 of them left in the world. They estimate that number to be even smaller with black rhinos. The World Wildlife Federation estimates that there are only about 27,000 rhinos left in the wild across the world and that number is continually dropping. Sadly, because of poachers and other circumstances like the loss of their natural habitats, very few rhinos exist outside of zoos, national parks, and reserves. Rhinos are certainly one of those species. Most of these species can be described as threatened or endangered in the wild. The goal is to help ensure the survival of selected species that live in zoos and aquariums. Every visit to the Buffalo Zoo helps the Zoo take another step toward achieving its mission of saving wildlife. What is the Buffalo Zoo's 'Species Survival Plan?'Ī Species Survival Plan is something that was developed in the 80s. Grounds remain open for one hour after admission gates close. The Buffalo Zoo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. Romeo is an incredibly special rhino who is strong, calm, and observant, and we’re glad Buffalo Zoo is providing a new space for him to enter into adulthood.” Lulu’s arrival helps support this critically endangered population through the Eastern Black Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan. “Lincoln Park Zoo is honored to provide a new home for Lulu,” said Cassy Kutilek, Curator of Carnivores and Large Mammals at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The black rhinos are currently considered one of the most endangered mammals on the planet, and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, due to threats that include poaching, habitat loss, and climate change. The critical exchange of these endangered animals is to help ensure that the species has any hope for survival. Romeo’s home will be in Buffalo over the course of the next few years, until he is ready to breed, while Lulu will be paired with one of the Chicago Zoo’s 19-year-old male rhinos. The total estimate for eastern black rhino is said to be 5,500 individuals remaining in the wild. There are currently 53 animals at 26 AZA-accredited zoos so every female being in a breeding situation is critical to the population.” Moving these rhinos to their new homes gives each Zoo a chance to work towards the conservation of the species. ![]() “The Buffalo Zoo is proud to be a part of this major rhino undertaking,” said Lisa Smith, Buffalo Zoo President, and CEO. The promising exchange is part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommendation to support Eastern black rhino conservation. On October 3, Romeo – a four-year-old male rhino – arrived to the Buffalo Zoo, while Lulu – a five-year-old female rhino – was transferred from Buffalo to Chicago. Recently, the Buffalo Zoo and the Lincoln Park Zoo announced an exchange between two eastern black rhinoceros (diceros bicornis michaeli). Helping to ensure the future of the planet’s endangered animals is integral to the mission of the Zoo. The Buffalo Zoo serves many roles, some of which revolve around the importance of international conservation efforts.
